What better way to show your love for Spelman College than everywhere you drive? We are excited to enter the next phase of bringing an official Spelman College specialty license plate to North Carolina!
Thanks to the initial interest and support of Spelman alumnae across the state, we can now begin collecting applications and payments from eligible North Carolina vehicle owners. To continue through the NCDOT process, we must submit 300 completed applications with payments before the license plate can be approved.
Be part of the FIRST group of Spelman College alumnae and supporters in North Carolina to ride in style with an official Spelman College NC Specialty License Plate.
Check out our list of FAQs before you get started:
Please complete both steps below. Your request cannot be processed unless we receive both your application and your payment.
Complete the official license plate application form electronically. Before you begin, please have the following available:
Driver's license
Current NC vehicle registration
Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
Automobile insurance information
Please note: The form will automatically include the $25 standard specialty plate fee. If you are requesting a standard specialty plate, please enter $25 on the total remittance line. If you are requesting a personalized specialty plate, please enter $30 on the personalized plate fee line and $55 on the total remittance line.
Before submitting, please verify that all information is accurate. Once completed, the form will be automatically submitted to the NC License Plate Committee. After signing, you may receive an email from Adobe asking you to verify your email address and signature. Please complete this step so your application can be fully submitted. Your application is not complete without payment (please see Step 2 below).
After completing your application, submit your payment through Zeffy. There are two options:
Standard Specialty Plate — $25: Choose this option if you would like the official Spelman College specialty plate with a standard NCDOT-assigned plate number. No personalization will be included.
Personalized Specialty Plate - $55: Choose this option if you would like the official Spelman College specialty plate with a custom/personalized plate number (four characters only). Personalized plates are subject to NCDOT approval and availability.
Important: Please make sure the payment option you select matches the total amount listed on your license plate application. Payments that do not match the application may delay processing.
Please note: Zeffy may automatically suggest an optional contribution to support their platform during checkout. This contribution is not required and is separate from your license plate payment. You may use the dropdown menu to change the Zeffy contribution amount, including selecting $0, before submitting your payment.
Once your application and payment are submitted, please help us spread the word!
Encourage other Spelman alumnae, students, parents, family, and friends across North Carolina who may be interested in purchasing a plate to complete the process as well.
We need 300 completed applications with payments before we can submit the full package to the NCDOT.
Together, we can bring more Spelman pride to roads across the state.
The Spelman College NC Specialty License Plate effort is being led by NAASC Charlotte, with support from the SE Regional Coordinator, the Triangle and Winston-Salem chapters, and authorization from Spelman College.
This is a statewide effort to bring an official Spelman College specialty license plate to North Carolina and create another way for alumnae to proudly represent Spelman across the state.
We do not have a final approved design yet. The license plate will use North Carolina’s First in Flight background and include the Sisters Chapel/Spelman logo. The final plate design will be determined through the NCDOT process once we have reached the required 300 paid applications.
Not yet. We must first collect 300 completed applications with payments and submit the full package to the NCDOT. Until the plate is approved and available through the NCDOT, please complete the application and payment process through NAASC Charlotte.
Yes. Specialty plates can only be ordered for vehicles that are currently titled and registered in North Carolina. The application requires vehicle-specific information, including your current NC plate number, vehicle details, title information, and insurance information.
Yes. Your request is not complete unless we receive both your completed application and your payment.
The NCDOT requires a minimum number of completed applications with payments before a new specialty plate can move forward in the process. We must collect 300 completed applications with payments before submitting the full package.
A standard specialty plate includes the official Spelman College plate design with an NCDOT-assigned plate number.
A personalized specialty plate includes the official Spelman College plate design with a custom plate number or phrase requested by the applicant. You are allowed four spaces for a personalized message. Personalized plates are subject to NCDOT approval and availability.
Yes, you may mail your application and application fee. Please make checks payable to NAASC Charlotte. Please email ncspelmanplate@charlottenaasc.org to obtain the mailing address.
Non personalized plates are $25. Personalized plates are an additional $30 (for a total of $55). Please note that the specialty license plate fee is an annual fee.
The specialty plate fee is an annual fee, not a one-time fee. To keep your Spelman license plate, the specialty plate fee will be due each year when you renew your vehicle registration. This annual fee is separate from any standard registration fees, taxes, or other DMV fees that may apply.
Zeffy does not charge required platform or processing fees to nonprofits. Instead, they ask payers if they would like to add an optional contribution to help keep the platform free. This contribution goes to Zeffy, not to the license plate application. It is completely optional, and you may use the dropdown menu at checkout to change the contribution amount, including selecting $0.
Please complete both steps at the same time. Applications and payments must be matched before they can be included in the final NCDOT submission.
The committee will track completed applications and payments. Once we reach 300 completed submissions, we will move forward with submitting the full package to the NCDOT.
Payments for the Spelman College NC Specialty License Plate will be collected through a secure payment platform and held in an account dedicated specifically to this effort. The account is owned and managed by the NAASC Charlotte Chapter. This helps ensure that all payments are tracked, matched with completed applications, and used only for the license plate submission process.
Payments are being collected to support the application and submission process for the Spelman College NC Specialty License Plate. If the committee does not reach the required 300 completed applications with payments, or if the plate is not approved by the NCDOT, applicants will be notified and refunds will be issued according to the final refund process established by the committee.
Once the full application package has been submitted to the NCDOT, refunds may not be available unless otherwise directed by the NCDOT.
Once we collect the required 300 completed applications with payments, the full package will be submitted to the NCDOT for review. It takes approximately 2-3 months after NCDOT receives the applications for the license plates to begin being printed. The faster we get to 300 prepaid applications, the faster the plates will go into production.
Because specialty plate applications are tied to a specific vehicle, the information you submit should match the vehicle currently titled and registered in your name in North Carolina. If you purchase a new vehicle, change your plate, or otherwise update your registration before the Spelman College NC Specialty License Plate is approved, you may need to complete an updated application.
If your vehicle information changes after submitting your application and payment, please contact us at ncspelmanplate@charlottenaasc.org so we can advise on next steps.
Yes, any North Carolina vehicle owner who would like to support and represent Spelman College may submit an application and pay the fee. If you have questions about eligibility, please contact us before submitting.
Please email ncspelmanplate@charlottenaasc.org with any questions.
